Salazar’s ‘Forgotten Heroes of the Holocaust Congressional Gold Medal Act’ Secures Over 225 Cosponsors

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) announced that H.R. 537, her bipartisan "Forgotten Heroes of the Holocaust Congressional Gold Medal Act,” has secured an impressive 226 cosponsors since its introduction last January. Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) is co-leading this bill, which now has the support of over half the Members of the House of Representatives.

H.R. 537 would grant the Congressional Gold Medal to the 60 diplomats from around the world who, through various means, saved the lives of Jews fleeing Nazi persecution. In most cases, diplomats would issue passports and travel visas to Jewish families often at great risk to their own lives. These actions alone saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of Jewish lives.

“It makes me proud to know that the majority of my colleagues in the House of Representatives back this important legislation,” said Rep. Salazar. “On Holocaust Remembrance Day, we not only remember those who perished during the Holocaust, but those who risked it all to save Jewish lives. I look forward to seeing this bill become law.”

Rep. Salazar is a leader in combating antisemitism both at home and abroad. She has repeatedly criticized leaders abroad who have espoused antisemitic tropes and conspiracies and introduced legislation to fight antisemitism in the United States.
