Salazar and Cruz Introduce Legislation to Hold Corrupt Kirchner Government Officials in Argentina Accountable

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) introduced the House companion to the Corruption in Argentina Stymied by Enforcing Sanctions, or ‘CASES Act’. Originally introduced by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), the bill would require the President to investigate five Argentine officials for corruption, including Argentina’s Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. If the President finds that these officials meet the criteria for corruption sanctions, the bill mandates the imposition of those sanctions.

“Cristina Fernández and her inner circle are some of Latin America’s most prolific embezzlers of public funds. It is time the United States take action against their unchecked abuse of power, which has resulted in theft and loss of billions of dollars belonging to the Argentinian people,” said Rep. Salazar.

“Cristina Fernández de Kirchner is a deeply corrupt politician who has undermined Argentina’s rule of law and its political institutions,” said Senator Cruz. “The evidence against her is public, credible, and backed up by Argentina’s courts. Beyond Argentina, she and her associates have undermined American security interests in the region by placing Argentina’s institutions at the service of Iran’s global terrorism campaign. They continue to do so. The United States Congress has passed into law authorities for the President to sanction individuals like Fernández de Kirchner and her associates. My CASES Act mandates that President Biden uses them for what they were meant for – protecting American interests abroad from corrupt politicians seeking to undermine them.”

BACKGROUND:

If enacted, the United States government would investigate the following Argentine officials:

• Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner;
• Congressman Máximo Kirchner;
• Vice Minister of Justice Juan Martín Mena;
• Senator Oscar Isidro Jose Parrilli; and
• Lead Prosecutor of the Argentine Treasury Carlos Alberto Zannini.

In December of 2022, Fernández de Kirchner was convicted by an Argentine federal court of having overseen, with the help of her son, daughter, and associates, an elaborate bribery and kickback scheme that defrauded the people of Argentina of billions of pesos.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Hoy, la representante María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) presentó, en la Cámara de Representantes, el complemento de la Ley “Corruption in Argentina Stymied by Enforcing Sanctions” o "CASES Act" (por sus siglas en inglés).

Presentado originalmente por el senador Ted Cruz (R-TX), el proyecto de ley exigiría al Presidente investigar a cinco funcionarios argentinos por corrupción, incluida la vicepresidenta de Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. 

Si el Presidente considera que estos funcionarios cumplen los criterios para ser sancionados por corrupción, el proyecto de ley ordena la imposición de dichas sanciones.

“Cristina Fernández y su círculo íntimo son algunos de los malversadores de fondos públicos más prolíficos de América Latina. Es hora de que los Estados Unidos tomen medidas contra su abuso de poder sin control, que ha dado lugar al robo y la pérdida de miles de millones de dólares pertenecientes al pueblo argentino”, dijo la congresista Salazar.

“Cristina Fernández de Kirchner es una política profundamente corrupta que ha socavado el Estado de Derecho y las instituciones políticas de Argentina. Las pruebas contra ella son públicas, creíbles y están respaldadas por los tribunales argentinos. Más allá de Argentina, ella y sus socios han socavado los intereses de seguridad estadounidenses en la región al poner las instituciones argentinas al servicio de la campaña terrorista global de Irán. Y continúan haciéndolo”, afirmó el senador Cruz.

“El Congreso de Estados Unidos ha aprobado una ley que autoriza al Presidente a sancionar a personas como Fernández de Kirchner y sus socios. Mi “CASES Act” ordena que el presidente Biden utilice esas sanciones para lo que fueron concebidas: proteger los intereses estadounidenses en el extranjero de los políticos corruptos que tratan de socavarlos”, aseguró el Senador.

ANTECEDENTES:

De promulgarse, el Gobierno de Estados Unidos investigaría a los siguientes funcionarios argentinos:

• Vicepresidenta Cristina Fernández de Kirchner;
• Diputado Máximo Kirchner;
• Viceministro de Justicia Juan Martín Mena;
• Senador Oscar Isidro José Parrilli; y
• el Procurador del Tesoro de la Nación Carlos Alberto Zannini.

En diciembre de 2022, Fernández de Kirchner fue condenada por un tribunal federal argentino por haber supervisado, con la ayuda de su hijo, su hija y sus socios, un elaborado plan de sobornos y comisiones ilegales que defraudó miles de millones de pesos al pueblo argentino.
