Representative Salazar Sends Letter Demanding Biden Administration Support Guatemala in Ending the Migration Crisis

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Western Hemisphere Subcommittee Chairwoman Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) of the House Foreign Affairs Committee sent a letter to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas demanding the Administration supply the Guatemalan government with resources to stop the expected surge of migrants ahead of Title 42’s expiration on May 11th.

“The Guatemalans have been pleading with the Biden Administration to help them stem the flow of illegal immigration through Guatemala, only to be treated with contempt in return,” said Rep. Salazar. “The United States cannot afford inaction on the Southern Border any longer. President Biden – it is time to end this crisis NOW!”

According to the government of Guatemala, the country is at a breaking point after bearing endless waves of migrants rushing through to the U.S. Southern Border following President Biden’s irresponsible comments at the beginning of his presidency. Some Central American nations profit from these migration flows by charging them a transit fee but do nothing to impede their passage.

The Guatemalan government’s capacity to effectively process and send unauthorized immigrants back to their countries of origin is thinning rapidly. This portends potentially catastrophic consequences for the United States and our border security given Guatemala’s strategic importance as a critical chokepoint on the migrant journey north. The United States must supply Guatemala with equipment and resources immediately.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – La congresista María Elvira Salazar (R-FL-27), presidenta del Subcomité del Hemisferio Occidental del Comité de Relaciones Exteriores de la Cámara de Representantes, envió una carta al Secretario del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional, Alejandro Mayorkas, exigiendo que la Administración proporcione al gobierno guatemalteco los recursos necesarios para detener el esperado aumento de migrantes antes de la expiración del Título 42 el 11 de mayo.

"Los guatemaltecos han estado suplicando a la Administración Biden que les ayude a detener el flujo de inmigración ilegal a través de Guatemala y en respuesta sólo han sido tratados con desprecio", dijo la representante Salazar. “Estados Unidos ya no puede permitirse la inacción en la frontera sur. Presidente Biden, ¡es tiempo de poner fin a esta crisis AHORA!", aseguró la Representante.

EN CONTEXTO:

Según el gobierno de Guatemala, el país se encuentra en un punto de ruptura tras soportar interminables oleadas de migrantes que se precipitan a la Frontera Sur de Estados Unidos tras los irresponsables comentarios del presidente Biden al inicio de su presidencia. 

Algunas naciones centroamericanas se benefician de estos flujos migratorios cobrándoles una tasa de tránsito, pero no hacen nada para impedir su paso. La capacidad del gobierno guatemalteco para procesar eficazmente y enviar de vuelta a sus países de origen a los inmigrantes no autorizados está disminuyendo rápidamente. 

Esto puede tener consecuencias catastróficas para Estados Unidos y la seguridad de nuestras fronteras, dada la importancia estratégica de Guatemala como punto crítico en el viaje de los inmigrantes hacia el Norte. Estados Unidos debe suministrar a Guatemala equipos y recursos de inmediato.
