REPRESENTATIVE SALAZAR & MAJORITY LEADER STEVE SCALISE REINTRODUCE RESOLUTION DENOUNCING THE FAILURES OF SOCIALISM

January 26, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. —Today, Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar (FL-27) and Majority Leader Steve Scalise (LA-01) re-introduced House Concurrent Resolution 9, a resolutiondenouncing the horrors and failures of socialism.

“The district I represent is one that knows the failures of socialism all too well,” said Congresswoman Salazar. "My constituents understand firsthand the consequences socialist ideology brought to our continent: misery, oppression, and exile. I am proud to introduce a resolution that makes it clear… socialism fails wherever it has been tried, and we don’t want it here.”

“The natural progression of socialist and communist policies is to a totalitarian state that deprives its citizens of basic freedoms and human rights. The American people know this – they’ve seen the horrors of communism and the tens of millions killed by regimes in China, the Soviet Union, North Korea, and elsewhere. Hundreds of thousands of Russians, Chinese, Cambodians, Koreans, Cubans, and Venezuelans have fled from murderous communist dictatorships and have legally resettled here in America. They are a living testament to the barbarity of these socialist regimes and the promise of the American dream.  I am proud to support Congresswoman Salazar’s resolution denouncing the horrors of socialism because this harmful ideology is opposed to everything the United States stands for, including the Founding Fathers’ belief in the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” said House Majority Leader Steve Scalise.

The resolution outlines several historical examples of the greatest crimes and tragedies of socialism, and why such a system goes against the founding principles of our great nation. It specifically highlights examples in the USSR, China, Cambodia, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela.

Passing this resolution would make a bold statement that the People’s House unequivocally denounces this cruel and unjust ideology. It would also ensure the United States commits to never begin or normalize the implementation of socialist policies that inevitably lead to economic ruin and political authoritarianism.

Among the 75 Members supporting this policy are: *House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Virginia Foxx, Thomas Massie, Nicole Malliotakis, Daniel Webster, Jack Bergman, Paul Gosar, Jenniffer González-Colón, Matt Gaetz, Ralph Norman, Ronny Jackson, Dan Bishop, Guy Reschenthaler, Wesley Hunt, Dan Newhouse, Jeff Duncan, Michael Waltz, Carlos Gimenez, Mary Miller, Andrew Clyde, Darrell Issa, Mike Johnson, Garret Graves, Chris Stewart, Claudia Tenney, Kat Cammack, French Hill, Tom McClintock, David Joyce, Troy Balderson, Jerry Carl, Doug LaMalfa, Burgess Owens, Elise Stefanik, Troy Nehls, Randy Feenstra, Jake LaTurner, Jim Jordan, Jake Ellzey, John Rutherford, William Timmons, Bill Posey, Tony Gonzales, David Kustoff, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Richard Hudson, Robert Aderholt, Robert Wittman, Vern Buchanan, John Moolenaar, Stephanie Bice, Pete Sessions, Russell Fry, Lance Gooden, Nathaniel Moran, Steve Womack, Mark Amodei, Gus Bilirakis, Mike Gallagher, Roger Williams, Ken Calvert, Randy Weber, Andrew Ogles, Michelle Fischbach, Dr. Michael Burgess, Lisa McClain, Mario Diaz-Balart, Morgan Luttrell, Ken Buck, Barry Moore, Jim Baird, Keith Self, Mike Bost, and Michael Guest.
