REP. SALAZAR CALLS ON PRESIDENT BIDEN TO GRANT GREENLIGHT FOR INTERNET ACCESS IN CUBA

July 28, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) called on President Biden to immediately grant the greenlight to provide internet access to the people of Cuba.

Rep. Salazar was joined by Governor Ron DeSantis, Lt. Governor Jeanette Nunez, Congressman Carlos Gimenez, and FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr, in this urgent demand.

The Castro regime has violently cracked down on massive pro-democracy protests that have spread throughout the island of Cuba. The regime has cut off internet access to prevent the Cuban people from uploading the repression onto social media.

Congresswoman Salazar has been working closely with both public and private sector partners who are willing to provide the necessary technology to boost internet access. The world must bear witness to the brutality the Cuban people are facing at this hour.

“We must restore internet to the island, information is power. We need President Biden to have the will to act and give the green light to implement these technologies - now,” said Congresswoman Salazar.

"The one thing that communist leaders like least is the attention and the spotlight of the international world, and that is what the power of internet connectivity is,” said FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr.

“The one thing that Communist regimes fear the most is the truth, and if we’re able to help Cubans communicate with one another and with the outside world, that truth will be decisive, and so Mr. President, now is the time to stand up to be counted,” said Governor Ron DeSantis.

“Governor DeSantis and I will continue to put pressure on the Biden Administration to not only provide internet access to the Cuban people but also stand against the despotic Castro and Díaz-Canel communist regime.” said Lt. Governor Jeanette Nunez.

“The Cuban government knows how important the internet is and to suppressing the will of the people and Cuba, and of course as they did it once...” said Congressman Gimenez.

Congresswoman Salazar currently represents Florida's beautiful 27th Congressional district which includes most of the City of Miami, its suburbs, and the beaches. She serves on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and is the only woman to serve on the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere.
