REP. SALAZAR URGES FOREIGN AFFAIRS CHAIR TO PRIORITIZE LATIN-AMERICA IN 117th CONGRESS

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) was joined by Reps. Kim (R-CA), Malliotakis (R-NY), Meijer (R-MI), Pfluger (R-TX), and Jackson (R-TX) in sending a letter to Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Gregory Meeks (D-NY) urging him to make the Western Hemisphere and Latin-America a priority.

"For far too long, in general, our neighbors in the Western Hemisphere have been neglected compared to other regions of the world," the lawmakers stated in the the letter. "Sadly, your decision to reduce Member spots on the Subcommittee by almost half reflects this neglect and we strongly urge you to reconsider and return the ratio of the Subcommittee back to eight Democrat seats and six Republican seats as it was in the 116th Congress."

"Latin-America must remain a priority of the United States. This move to gut the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere is particularly offensive to millions of Americans who are victims of the brutal socialist regimes in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua and the millions who rely on trade with Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil to sustain their businesses.

"During these unprecedented times, our neighbors have been among the hardest hit by the pandemic. We must renew our commitments to our allies and stand-up to predatory dictators weaponizing COVID-19 to oppress their own people." said Congresswoman Salazar.

Congresswoman Salazar represents Florida’s beautiful 27th Congressional District, which includes most of the City of Miami, its suburbs, and the beaches. She currently serves on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Hoy, la Congresista María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) ha sido acompañada por los Representantes Kim (R-CA), Malliotakis (R-NY), Meijer (R-MI), Pfluger (R-TX) y Jackson (R-TX) al enviar una carta al presidente del Comité de Relaciones Exteriores del Congreso federal, Gregory Meeks (D-NY), instándolo a priorizar la política hacia el hemisferio occidental y América Latina

"Durante demasiado tiempo, nuestros vecinos del hemisferio occidental han sido descuidados en comparación con otras regiones del mundo", afirmaron los legisladores en la carta. "Lamentablemente, su decisión de reducir los puestos de miembros en el Subcomité del Hemisferio Occidental a casi la mitad refleja esta negligencia y le instamos e que reconsidere y devuelva la proporción del Subcomité a ocho escaños demócratas y seis republicanos como estaba en el 116º Congreso".

"América Latina debe seguir siendo una prioridad para Los Estados Unidos. Este movimiento para destripar al Subcomité del Hemisferio Occidental es particularmente ofensivo para millones de estadounidenses que son víctimas de los brutales regímenes socialistas en Cuba, Venezuela y Nicaragua y los millones que dependen del comercio con México, Colombia y Brasil para sostener sus negocios.

"Durante estos tiempos sin precedentes, nuestros vecinos de la región han estado entre los más afectados por la pandemia. Debemos renovar nuestros compromisos con nuestros aliados y enfrentarnos a aquellos que se aprovechan de la pandemia del COVID-19 para reprimir a sus pueblos y usurpar el poder." dijo la Congresista Salazar.

La Congresista Salazar representa el hermoso distrito 27 de la Florida, que incluye la mayor parte de la Ciudad de Miami, las playas y sus comunidades adyacentes. Forma parte del Comité de Relaciones Exteriores de la Cámara de Representantes.
