Hundreds of Artists, Actors, and Creators Back Salazar’s No AI FRAUD Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, nearly 300 creators across the music and TV/film industries signed an open letter in USA Today backing Reps. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) and Madeleine Dean (D-PA)’s No AI FRAUD Act (H.R. 6943). This would be the first federal piece of legislation to pass Congress that provides an individual right to our voice and likeness while providing the necessary tools to fight AI deepfakes.
“I am thrilled to have the support of nearly 300 artists, songwriters, actors, and other creators for my landmark No AI FRAUD Act,” said Rep. Salazar. “You don’t have to be a musical artist to see the threat AI abuse poses to the American people. Let’s get this bill signed so we can protect ourselves from criminals profiting off our creativity.”
On February 2, 2024, the Human Artistry Campaign published an ad on USA Today with the signatures of nearly 300 songwriters, actors, artists, and other creators supporting the statement, “The No AI FRAUD Act would defend your fundamental human rights to your voice & likeness, protecting everyone from nonconsensual deepfakes.”
Signatories include names such as 21 Savage, Bette Midler, Cardi B & Offset, Chuck D, Common, Gloria Estefan, Jason Isbell, the estate of Johnny Cash, Kelsea Ballerini, Lainey Wilson, Lauren Daigle, Lamb of God, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, Nicki Minaj, Questlove, Reba McEntire, Sheryl Crow, Smokey Robinson, the estate of Tom Petty, Trisha Yearwood, Vince Gill, Bradley Cooper, Clark Gregg, Debra Messing, F. Murray Abraham, Fran Drescher, Laura Dern, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Kristen Bell, Kiefer Sutherland, Julianna Margulies, Rosario Dawson, and hundreds of others.
The No AI FRAUD Act is Rep. Salazar’s groundbreaking legislation to establish an individual right to one’s voice and likeness. In doing so, individuals will be given a legal basis to sue to protect their identities from AI abuse, including deepfakes.
Laws at the state level to address these issues are inconsistent and, in some cases, not enough. Specifically, the No AI FRAUD Act establishes a federal solution with baseline protections for all Americans by:
- Reaffirming that everyone’s likeness and voice is protected, giving individuals the right to control the use of their identifying characteristics;
- Empowering individuals to enforce this right against those who facilitate, create, and spread AI frauds without their permission; and
- Balancing the rights against First Amendment protections to safeguard speech and innovation.
