Salazar Urges American Leadership on Cuba and Haiti on the U.S. House Floor

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Western Hemisphere Subcommittee Chairwoman María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) delivered a speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives urging American action and leadership on Cuba and Haiti.
As the economic and political crisis in Cuba and the presence of gangs in Haiti threaten stability in the Caribbean and the Western Hemisphere, Chairwoman Salazar reminded the Biden Administration that the United States has an obligation to lead our neighbors along the path towards liberty and security, not shy away from it.
“We must extinguish the flames of instability and communism burning in our backyard,” said Chairwoman Salazar. “If we don’t, they will surely continue through to the kitchen. We cannot ignore Cuba or Haiti.”
On March 17, 2024, the Cuban people took to the streets in various cities in eastern Cuba, including Santiago and Bayamo. After the protests, the communist regime once again blamed the United States for promoting them for “destabilizing ends” and the Embargo for causing the economic crisis.
However, the facts prove time and time again that the Cuban dictatorship has sole responsibility for the deteriorating situation of the country. Congresswoman Salazar once again called on the Biden Administration to demonstrate firm support for the Cuban people in their requests for “LIBERTAD”, and not for the regime in Havana, which is in the business of power.
In Haiti, dangerous gangs have taken over the country and plunged it into chaos. This chaos is leading Haiti into the greatest social, political, and security crisis the Haitians have ever experienced. Without American action, Haiti will continue to fall to gang violence, and its impacts will have a ripple effect in the region, particularly in the State of Florida.
