Salazar Welcomes Venezuelan President-Elect Edmundo González Urrutia to the United States Capitol

January 6, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) welcomed the legitimately elected President-elect of Venezuela, Edmundo González Urrutia, to her office at the United States Capitol this Monday. Salazar was joined by incoming National Security Advisor Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL) and Reps. Carlos A. Giménez (R-FL) and Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL).

While González Urrutia is constitutionally obligated to take office on January 10, 2025, the entrenched Nicolás Maduro regime is employing its repressive apparatus to try and stop the peaceful transfer of power.

Welcome to the United States of America!said Rep. Salazar.America stands strong with you and the millions more who voted for your presidency. We cannot let the socialists silence the will of the Venezuelan people.

During her meeting, Representative Salazar reaffirmed her commitment to defending the democratic legitimacy of the July 28 presidential election and assured President-elect Edmundo González and opposition leader María Corina Machado of her support. González Urrutia will continue his tour by traveling to the Dominican Republic and Panama.

Since the July 28 election, Congresswoman Salazar has championed the fight for freedom led by Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia and María Corina Machado. She joined a bipartisan group of her colleagues to introduce the REVOCAR Act and VALOR Act, legislation that would cut off all financial lifelines for the Maduro regime’s repression at a time when he is strengthening the crackdown on opposition leaders and operatives throughout the country.

Salazar proudly represents Florida’s 27th Congressional District, which is home to tens of thousands of Venezuelan Americans.
