Salazar Praises Revista Semana’s Vicky Dávila for Journalistic Bravery in Colombia

April 18, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Reps. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) and Carlos A. Giménez (R-FL) presented Vicky Dávila, director of the Colombian news outlet Revista Semana, with an award to honor her and her publication for remaining dedicated to quality investigative journalism as Gustavo Petro occupies the Casa de Nariño (Presidential Palace).

With President Petro having publicly attacked members of the Colombian press for accurately covering his administration, the United States Congress must stand with those journalists on the ground fighting to preserve Colombia’s vibrant democracy.

It is an honor to receive Vicky Dávila in the U.S. Capitol, the heart of American democracy,” said Rep. Salazar. “We in Congress are here to defend journalists like Vicky and to defend Colombia’s honor.

Last year, Colombian President Gustavo Petro shocked the world by suggesting that the press in his country were “misinforming the public” and even “promoting disinformation in the public opinion.” As Chairwoman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee and a former journalist herself, Rep. Salazar condemned these attacks forcefully in a hearing in July 2023 and continues to support the Colombian press.

In the event hosted with Rep. Giménez, Salazar reaffirmed her commitment to defending the voices in Colombia fighting for democracy the most from Washington, D.C.

Congresswoman Salazar represents thousands of Americans of Colombian descent in Florida’s 27th Congressional District. There are over 1.4 million Colombians in the United States, making them one of the largest Hispanic diasporas in the country.
