Salazar Delivers $3.5 Million in Federal Funding for Affordable Housing for Senior Citizens in Miami

October 24, 2024

MIAMI, FL – Today, Rep. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) joined the Miami City Commission to unveil a $3.5 million investment in new affordable housing in the City for senior citizens.

The funding will go towards the construction of the Flagler Affordable Senior Housing Project, a Community Funding Project requested and approved in the Fiscal Year 2024 Consolidated Appropriations Act, legislation the Congresswoman proudly supported. This project will add a significant number of new housing units for seniors in our community.

Today, I want to present this check for $3.5 million for our seniors in Miami,” said Rep. Salazar. “This funding will go towards the Flagler Affordable Senior Housing Project – giving safe, beautiful, and affordable living to seniors in our community. That is the way we treat those who paid and gave our community years of labor and contributions to the Social Security system.

The new affordable housing project for senior citizens is one of many of Rep. Salazar’s initiatives to address the affordability and safe housing crisis facing South Florida. Other legislation and projects the Congresswoman has championed or supported include:

  • Introduced H.R. 3533, the Home Advantage for American Families Act. This legislation increases the real estate sales tax for foreign buyers, ensuring Americans are not priced out of the market.
  • Introduced H.R. 4305, the Shelter Act. This legislation provides a tax credit to working families and small businesses to invest in disaster mitigation improvements to make their homes and property more resilient.
  • Supported H.R. 7024, the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act. This bill increases the low-income housing tax credit, the most important resource for creating affordable housing in the United States today, from 9% to 12.5%. It also authorizes State and local agencies to issue tax credits for lower-income housing supply to developers.
  • Urged Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge to approve the Preservation and Reinvestment Initiative for Community Enhancement (PRICE) program to ensure plentiful federal investment and grants for affordable housing.
